Catherine Burchill – Principal
Catherine has been working in the legal industry since 1997. She has completed a double degree being a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Arts Justice Studies, graduating from QUT in 2001. She completed her article clerkship with Russo Lawyers in January, 2002 and was admitted in the Supreme Court of Queensland and to practice in the High Court of Australia also in January, 2002.
Since being admitted, Catherine worked in various roles in different firms as well as a legal officer at the Office of the Public Trustee of Queensland until deciding to re-join Russo Lawyers and head a branch office at Kedron. After completing the practice management course, she commenced her own firm with Jeff Horsey in 2004 and has been working in that capacity since.
Catherine is a member of the Criminal Law Section Committee, Professional Conduct Committee and Committee of Management of the Queensland Law Society, and currently lectures part time at the College of Law. She is an accredited duty lawyer for adult and children’s matters and is a qualified Independent Children’s Lawyer and Separate Representative.
Catherine has a keen interest in criminal law, criminal confiscations matters, family law (both property and children), child protection and domestic violence matters. She is passionate regarding the rights of those that are vulnerable in the legal system, especially persons with a disability and children.
Sophia Bookallil – Partner
Sophia joined Burchill & Horsey Lawyers as a Senior Associate in May 2016, and is an experienced and well respected family law practitioner with over a decade of experience in the legal field.
Sophia was admitted as a solicitor in New South Wales in 2002. Commencing her career in general law, and working on cases in the family law field, Sophia quickly realised that she wanted to make family law her specialisation. In 2007, Sophia moved to Queensland to take up a role that would enable her to pursue this specialisation and interest. Since then, she has worked on an extensive range of projects, covering all aspects of family law.

Shaun Kolo – Solicitor
Shaun joined Burchill & Horsey Lawyers in January 2017 after honing his skills while working in the regional centres of Ipswich and Toowoomba. Shaun practices in the areas of family law, domestic violence, child protection, and criminal law. He is an accredited duty lawyer in adult criminal matters and has been admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland and the High Court since 2014. Shaun prides himself on his ability to provide clear advice in easy to understand language.
Claire Champney – Solicitor
Claire has completed her Supervised Traineeship at our firm and was recently admitted as a Solicitor to the Supreme Court of Queensland. She is eager to learn, efficient and provides support for Sophia Bookallil, our Senior Associate in family law matters.

Penny McCreery – Solicitor
Penny initially began working in the legal industry in 2000, as a legal secretary and conveyancing clerk in Brisbane. She went on to work for several major financial institutions where she worked in mortgage conveyancing. Upon leaving the banking industry, Penny commenced her legal studies, and completed her law degree at the University of Southern Qld in 2016. She then worked at Probation and Parole in Hervey Bay during 2016 whilst completing her Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from QUT.
Penny was admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of Queensland and the High Court of Australia in March 2017 and initially worked in Maryborough where she practised in the areas of conveyancing and property, business and commercial matters, criminal law, and child protection. She then went on to work in Childers where she predominantly practised in wills and estates, family law, conveyancing and property transactions (including business and commercial property, farms and leasing).
Penny has held positions on various committees and boards including sporting groups, chambers of commerce and not-for-profit organisations. She has a passion for advocacy, and a keen interest in criminal law, child protection, and succession law. She is also an accredited duty lawyer for adult criminal matters.
Sara McKay – Office Manager
Sara has been with our firm since 2007 and has progressed to the role of Office Manager over the years and also provides support to Catherine Burchill with managing the firm. Sara is a long standing valued member of our team and is always willing to help our valued clients with any queries.
Tracey Reeves – Administrative Assistant
Tracey assists our Associate Shaun Kolo. Tracey has been with our firm since 2013 coming from a background of working in the State Courts for approximately 14 years. She is an essential member of our team and is always willing to assist our valued clients.
Glenys Berry – Administrative Assistant
Glenys has been with the firm since early 2000’s and assists with any overflow work. Glenys has a long background in training in administration. Glenys has a strong work ethic and is always willing to go above and beyond for our team and clients.
Jennifer Millers – Administrative Assistant
Jennifer assists our Partner, Sophia Bookallil and Solicitor, Claire Champney with all administrative work in the City Office. Jennifer is currently studying Bachelor of Law and Criminology.
Jo Miller – Administrative Assistant
Jo assists our Principal, Catherine Burchill and Solicitor, Penny McCreery. Jo has been employed by our firm since early 2019 and works closely with Ms Burchill on children’s and criminal matters. Prior to joining Burchill & Horsey, Jo worked as an Admin Assistant at another law firm for three years. Before transitioning into law, Jo worked mainly for large accounting firms and has also worked as an Executive Assistant for Council.
Natasha Gaddes – Receptionist
Natasha is our welcoming receptionist and has been with our firm since 2019. As the first point of call for our clients, she is polite, helpful and accommodating. She is always willing to help and we are privileged to have her as a member of our team.
